The City of Utrecht hosts 10,000 international students every year, yet 60% report difficulty integrating with the local community.

The need

Utrecht is home to around 70,000 students, including a large international community. Although the city has a thriving student culture, many international students struggle to build meaningful relationships within Dutch society. For those arriving far from home, feelings of loneliness and isolation are common, and many have little or no connection with a local church or Christian community.

The Ministry

Rooted is a young adult ministry that exists to be a home away from home for Dutch and international students. Through shared meals, Bible studies, games, music and genuine friendship, students are welcomed into a Christ-centred community where they can explore the Bible, ask questions about faith and experience Christian fellowship.

Serving as an InterAction worker with IFES Netherlands, Annie helps support this ministry by welcoming new students, leading Bible studies, building relationships and organising outreach events that introduce students to Jesus in a natural and welcoming environment.

The Vision

Having experienced the warmth and encouragement of Rooted while studying abroad in Utrecht, Annie is passionate about helping others find the same community. Her vision is that every international student arriving in Utrecht would know there is a place where they are welcomed, loved and invited to discover the hope found in Christ.

As students come and go each academic year, Rooted provides an ongoing opportunity to reach those who may never otherwise hear the gospel. Alongside helping Christian students grow in their faith, Annie hopes to equip them to share the good news of Jesus with fellow students, both during their time in Utrecht and wherever God leads them in the future.
