Cultivating a culture of disciple-making
Nearly 98% of Kenyan churches lack faithful men and women who can handle God’s Word well and proclaim it clearly
My story
Many people in Kenya call themselves Christians because they were born into Christian households or because they follow the external practices of the church—giving money, attending services, going through catechism, baptism and confirmation. For some, spiritual maturity is defined by experiences like “speaking in tongues”.
I grew up in a Christian family and was passionate about church and prayer meetings, but I never truly understood the gospel. At the age of 15, I heard the Bible preached clearly, and for the first time I understood the reality of sin and my need for Jesus. Even after this, I struggled because I didn’t have men who could disciple me and help me read and handle the Bible faithfully.
I’m so grateful for the training God has provided through iServe Africa in Kenya, the Cornhill Training Course, and the St Helen’s Bishopsgate Associate Training Scheme in London. These last five years of training have been deeply formative, giving me skills in handling the Bible carefully, being intentional about Word ministry, and teaching the Bible clearly and faithfully to others.
Ministry in Nairobi
Nearly 98% of Kenyan churches lack faithful men and women who can handle God’s Word well and proclaim it clearly. As a church in Kenya, we desperately need such men and women—trained and equipped to serve in local churches by discipling others and faithfully teaching the Bible. This is part of the solution to the prosperity gospel, legalistic religion and the “power gospel” that exalts the so-called “man of God” above God Himself.
Christ Church Loresho is a great place for me to be doing this, especially having served there for the past two years. The church has been committed to faithfully teaching the Bible since it was planted four years ago in West Nairobi, and the Lord has continued to grow His church there.
I’m passionate about gospel work in Kenya. I long to help others know the Lord Jesus, live for Him, and be equipped to faithfully witness to others. My desire is to cultivate a culture of disciple-making and multiplication in Loresho and beyond—so that many embrace mission as part of their daily lives.
Day-to-day ministry
I’ll be helping people from both the Kibagare slum and Loresho community to know the God of the Bible and have confidence in Him alone. I’ll be doing this through:
Regular pastoral visits to church members
One-to-one discipleship with young men
Evangelism in the local community
Occasional Sunday preaching
Training both within the local church and in university Christian Unions around Nairobi.
I hope to keep doing this alongside the pastoral team at Christ Church Loresho as I prepare for church planting in about 3–5 years’ time.
Prayer points
Give thanks for the work of Christ Church Loresho and the opportunity to serve there.
Pray that more faithful men and women would be raised up to handle God’s Word well.
Pray for gospel fruit through discipleship and evangelism in Loresho and Kibagare.
Pray for wisdom and preparation for future church planting.
