Serving as doctors at the Good News Hospital, Madagascar

In Madagascar, around 75% of the population lives in poverty and access to healthcare remains severely limited.

Why Madagascar?

Matthew and Katy will serve at The Good News Hospital in Mandritsara, a remote area in northern Madagascar. Founded in 1988 as a small outpatient clinic, the hospital has grown into a 57-bed hospital with operating theatres, maternity services and an ophthalmology department. It sees around 2,000 patients each month and performs around 1,400 operations each year. The hospital serves a huge area, equivalent to around half the size of Wales, and some patients walk for several days to receive treatment.

Vision and calling

For several years, Matthew and Katy have heard about the work of The Good News Hospital through their church in Nottingham. After returning from two years working in Australia, they were considering how best to use the year before starting further medical training in August 2027. When they heard that the hospital needed doctors at their stage of training, they saw an opportunity to use their medical skills in short-term mission. They both felt this was a valuable way to serve those in need while helping to make the gospel known.

Ministry

Matthew and Katy will work as doctors at The Good News Hospital, using their medical training to care for patients in a place where access to healthcare is severely limited. Through their work, they hope to serve the local community and contribute to the hospital’s wider gospel ministry.

Matthew and Katy are two junior doctors from the UK. They met at university in Nottingham and have been married for five years. Outside of work, they enjoy running, walking up mountains and cooking.
