Bosco and Heidi Bukeera

Almost all Ugandans believe God exists and 85% call themselves Christians. Yet there remains a shallow understanding of the gospel and a limited desire to pursue holiness.

The semi-rural village of Kayunga is situated 30 minutes from the capital, Kampala. It is home to frail old people living in mud houses, alongside the wealthy who make the daily commute to Kampala for work.  Due to the multitude of material, social and emotional needs in Kayunga, many turn to the prosperity gospel for promises of material gain, or to witchdoctors to gain healing or grant curses.  Many mistakenly mix their Christian faith with both traditional African religion and the influences of the secular West. We have not found a church in this community that both faithfully preaches the gospel and emphasises discipleship.

A church that faithfully proclaims the gospel

We previously served in a home for ex-street kids in Kayunga’s neighbouring village. During this time we saw some spiritual growth in a number of the children in our care, but struggled to find a local church to take them to where they could grow in their faith and become part of a Christian community. Bosco was consequently encouraged to consider Church planting in Kayunga.

We long to establish a church that faithfully proclaims the gospel, and to see people turning away from unbelief, the lies of prosperity preaching and witchcraft to the true essence of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  We yearn to see those in our community trust Christ and earnestly pursue holiness.

Planting a church and integrating into the community

Bosco (Ugandan) and Heidi (British) returned to Uganda after three years of training and preparation in the UK.

Bosco and his family, with the support of their church (Three Bridges Free Church, Crawley), are based in Kayungaplanting a Reformed Bible-teaching church. As the Pastor, Bosco leads and coordinates the preaching, evangelism, discipleship and training others for ministry.

Alongside home-schooling their young family, Heidi is learning the local language so she can integrate more fully into the community and be better equipped to minister amongst the locals. She is involved in both the music and children’s ministry of the local church, and helps with practical and administrative tasks whenever there is need.

Packing up chairs and taking out the gospel

"As her Pastor, I knew I had to do whatever was needed at this time, so soon I found myself in our car, transporting the body back to our village." Mission partners in Uganda tell of an incredible opportunity to speak to those in their community who have no hope of life with Christ after death.
