Reaching out to youth and children in Kikuyu, Kenya
Tell us a bit about yourself
I was born in Kenya to a Christian family. I came to know Jesus at the age of 10. Mentorship and discipleship have played a huge role in my growth as a Christian. My prayer has been that the Lord would provide a place for me to receive training on how I would teach his word to others. I have now had five years of training: two years spent in Kenya at iServe Africa, and three years in the UK on the Cornhill Training Course and where I was placed at All Saints Church, Crowborough.
What is the need?
There is a huge need for discipleship among Christians in Kenya and this applies to young people too.
In recent years, churches in Kenya have been deliberate about reaching out to the youth and children with God’s word. Sadly, most of the teaching has been geared towards outward behavioural change and legalism. This has been to the detriment of the gospel being taught to youth and children.
What will you be doing?
I will be working with youth and children in Muthiga (an area on the outskirts of Nairobi). This will be through Gracepoint Church Waiyaki Way, which was planted in September 2021.
Various ministry needs have arisen since Gracepoint Church was planted. One of the major needs is for a youth worker, because of the increasing number of children attending church.
My aims are to:
- be directly involved in the Bible teaching among the youth and children.
- train up people within the church family to teach God’s word to the youngsters.
- get alongside parents to help them teach God’s word to their children.
I will be going back to Kenya in September 2022 to begin my new role as youth and children’s worker at Gracepoint Church Waiyaki Way. I am really excited about teaching God’s word to children and young people, and pointing them to Jesus through faithful Bible teaching.
