Peter and Promise Mukungi
Currently serving at Christ Church Loresho, Nairobi, and preparing to plant a church in Mwingi Town, Lower Eastern Kenya.
Due to the appeal of the ‘prosperity gospel’, whose teachings are found all over Kenya, many people lack an understanding of the Bible’s central message about Jesus.
Although 83% of people in Kenya identify as Christians or have access to Bibles, the prosperity message has blinded many to the truth and poses one of the greatest challenges to understanding the gospel in this land.
Little consistent Bible teaching over the past four centuries in Kenya has resulted in shallow teaching and churches that have drifted away from the centrality of the gospel. The need for truthful, faithful and consistent Bible teachers, rooted in local churches led by servant-hearted elders, is increasingly evident.
Christ Church Loresho is a growing, vibrant church plant, striving to teach God’s Word faithfully in Nairobi. The church is witnessing a real hunger for truth among those who join us.
This local church has been a wonderful place to serve and grow, as we witness the Lord building his Church and shining the light of the gospel into the lives of many nominal Christians. Currently, Peter and Promise serve in the following ways:
- Serving among families
- Carrying out evangelism in the slum neighbourhoods
- Peter preaching on occasional Sundays
- Engaging in pastoral visits within the community
- Reading the Bible one-to-one with people
- Leading Bible studies
- Helping with in-house training
- Serving in a range of pastoral duties
Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He answered, “How can I understand unless someone explains it to me?” (Acts 8:30–31)
Ministering at Christ Church has been a wonderful preparation for Peter and Promise’s long-term aim of planting a biblical, evangelical church in the gospel-needy town of Mwingi, in Lower Eastern Kenya, towards Kenya’s border with Somalia.
Mwingi Town is a rapidly growing, gospel-needy suburban town, four hours from Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. As a gateway to the Lower Eastern and North Eastern regions of Kenya, it is an ideal location for advancing the gospel.
Peter and Promise’s heart is to see many people come to know, follow and live for Jesus in the town, throughout the Eastern region, and further afield.
As plans and prayers for the Mwingi Town church plant continue, Peter and Promise, alongside a team of others, are attending bi-monthly pilot fellowship gatherings there, which have been greatly encouraging. They plan to launch the church plant in June 2027.
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” (Matthew 9:36)
