Tamás Burjan
There are still many opportunities in Hungary for Gospel witness in a church-context as well as in the workplace. The way church ministry is developing is based not on one single minister but on a team of serving people.
We work in the local congregation of the Reformed Church of Hungary in a central-Hungarian small town called Nagykáta. Like many other places this one is mainly Roman-Catholics, and there are many nominal Christians too. The church has a great mission of preaching Christ and showing what true Christianity is.
We are encouraged by the testimony of those who found Christ and joined our church.
Within the church
Tamás is the leader of the missionary group in the church and together with the minister and the leaders of the church prayerfully put forward a plan to reach out to the lost through preaching the Word, being a welcoming fellowship and teaching to equip members to speak to friends and family about Christ. Tamás teaches at mid-week Bible studies, is involved in preaching and provides counselling. He is often consulted on difficult theological questions and the practical outworking of true doctrines and what they mean in the life of a Christian.
In the workplace
Tamás works as an engineer and has had meaningful conversations with colleagues about Christ. Many conversations lead to clear witness of the grace to be found only in Christ. He is grateful for fellow Christians at work and seekers who are hungry for the truth.
A team for gospel work
Though currently (beginning of 2019) we have no pastor in the church, we pray for a team that carries out the work of the gospel locally as well as in the neighbouring villages. There are two small daughter churches with their small buildings who gather to listen to the Word.
The good thing we see is that good teaching is appreciated in the churches. Lives reflect the truths that the people learn.
Preaching the word in and out of season
I am also involved in a wide variety of ministries in assisting at a nearby church plant as well as being committed to preaching the Gospel in the three churches: our main church and in the two small daughter churches.
My aim as experienced under the last two ministers is to share in the work and preach the Word “in season and out of season”. My desire is to have that bond with the minister where joys and challenges of the ministry can be shared so that in the end God would be glorified.
Practically, we have a church magazine that is distributed in many hundred copies. We hold – if there is a team of volunteers from the UK – English language Bible weeks for children and young people.
